Scholars' candid shots

Congratulations to the speakers and participants in the recent scholars forum held at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
Kudos to all participants and see you all in other AFST activities.

AFST First General Assembly AY 2015-2016
October.. It’s the time of the year once again. The time when students had just begun to be settled back in one’s universities (reality check: #student life mode on) after having enjoyed a long summer break in our beloved Inang Bayan, mahal naming Pilipinas.. Well, for some that is. Also, it’s time to have the first AFST groupie for this school year as we gathered once again to meet new friends and old friends alike. This time around, it was for our first (as we have two) general assembly for this academic year.

During our meetings, we usually discuss matters pertaining to activities which are planned out for the school year. These are some serious business. Take a look (the following two pictures) at our President Irene and Vice President Rex as they discuss some important matters the organization needs to deal with. Don’t mind the #technical difficulty with the projector.hehe They do look serious enough right?
As we are an organization of scholars, it is just but common that everyone had ideas to share. Here is Leo, sharing his views..
And Krisan.. with Michael fondly listening while munching on chips.
And Kimji.. whilst Leo is attentively listening and taking a pause in eating his Dorito.
In between some serious talk, we had ice breakers! We had a cheese ring relay.
I guess the chips weren’t enough as they also munched on the cheese rings as well.
Gatherings such as these are simple breaks from an everyday student’s life in Taiwan. Here, we get to meet other Pinoy students. Pinoy students of different fields of specialization coming from different parts of Taiwan and from different parts of the Philippines, all sharing the same goal of advancing knowledge in the hopes of assisting our beloved country in the future to come.

AFST convened its first Scholars’ Forum at NTU
Filipino scholars from varied academic disciplines and different universities in
Taiwan came together for the first AFST Scholar’s Forum held last March 29, 2015 at
the National Taiwan University (NTU). One assistant professor, Dr. John Francis Diaz
(Chung Yuan Christian University) and three graduate students, namely: Mr. Leo
Armada (National Central University), Ms. Maria Karmella Apaya (Academia Sinica and
National Chung Hsing University), and Mr. Angelito Silverio (Chung Yuan Christian
University) presented results of their respective academic research projects.
Representatives from MECO-Taiwan headed by Ms. Mary Anne Sioco (MECO
Information Officer in Taiwan) also attended the event.
The presentations covered four different but equally interesting and relevant
studies on: (a) application of Granger causality testing in the chicken or egg and duck or
egg conundra; (b) seamount subduction and forearc deformation along the Manila
trench; (c) role of oxidized lipids (oxylipins) in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)
epithelial-to mesenchymal signaling and the potential of plant-derived polyunsaturated
fatty acids as novel TNBC therapy; and (d) development of a multi-parameter sensing
system that can measure ions and urine parameters to assess the potential of having
urinary stone formation (urolithiasis).
True to the aim of AFST in organizing the forum, Filipino scholars in Taiwan were
able to present their research work and interact with the other scholars. The forum also
allowed participants to identify common research interests and future collaborative
research directions. With the success of the first forum, AFST plans to make the
Scholar’s Forum a regular event.
